In the 2024 Philadelphia 76ers draft, Providence guard Devin Carter is a viable option at the 16th…

The Philadelphia 76ers have the 16th pick in the 2024 NBA draft and have several options for what they may do with it. They have two options: trade the choice for a win-now talent or sign a young potential.

While it is expected that the Sixers would trade the pick given their timeline, there are some viable choices at 16. One of those choices is Providence guard Devin Carter, a gritty guard who can contribute on both ends.

Carter’s strengths

The son of former NBA guard Anthony Carter, the younger Carter put up serious numbers in the draft combine’s athletic tests. He ranked third among 2024 prospects in the lane agility drill and tied for first with his 42-inch maximum vertical leap. That athletic ability goes hand-in-hand with his ballhandling development and shooting.

Carter shot 37.7% from deep in the 2023-24 season at Providence while averaging 19.7 points, 3.6 assists, and 1.8 steals. That type of production earned him Big East Player of the Year honors.

Carter defensively and on the glass

He is an athletic guard, which allows him to stay with taller and stronger guards. He is officially listed at 6 feet, 2 1/4 inches without shoes, which means he will have to battle tooth and nail on the defensive end of the floor. However, he didn’t have many issues on that end in college, and he should be able to make an impact on that end in the NBA.

His leaping ability will also come in handy on the glass. Obviously, rebounding has been an issue in the past, especially in the playoffs against the New York Knicks, and somebody like Carter would make an impact right away in that department.

Carter;s potential fit with the Sixers

Due to his smaller stature, it would be tough to see Carter playing in any lineups next to Tyrese Maxey, but he could be a nice backup guard and run the offense for the second unit. He would likely contribute to playoff wins due to his peskiness on the defensive end and willingness to make the little hustle plays that matter so much in the postseason.
