Willy Caballero discovered at the age of six that he preferred to be the player giving directions to people nearby. It was among the factors that led him to become a goalkeeper.
Originally an outfield player, Caballero joined a local team in Santa Elena, his hometown in northern Argentina, but switched to goalkeeping when his teammates decided they didn’t want to play in the goal. They then started to win.
“I got into the habit of enjoying commands, criticizing the defenders, and correcting people,” Caballero stated in a 2013 interview with the Spanish-language sports website Nuevo Futbol. “It stuck, and I became a keeper at age six.”
The now 42-year-old Caballero will be the man on the touchline on Monday night as Leicester City takes on Ipswich Town, another team vying for promotion. He will give the players instructions and words of encouragement.
Assistant manager Caballero will take over in the technical area as Enzo Maresca serves a one-game suspension up in the King Power Stadium stands for receiving three yellow cards this season.
