Bayern Munich respond to Manchester United’s approach for Mathys Tel.

Max Eberl, Bayern Munich’s new board member, is sure that the club intends to maintain Mathys Tel despite a reported proposal from Manchester United.

Tel has shown flashes of talent since joining Bayern from Rennes for €28.5 million (£24.4 million) in July 2022, but he has only played one Bundesliga match in nearly two seasons.

According to reports in Germany, Manchester United has been studying Tel’s status at Bayern Munich and has made initial contact about a potential transfer for the 18-year-old player.

Tel’s advisor has also refused to rule out a move this summer, implying that the forward is dissatisfied with his lack of opportunities under Thomas Tuchel this season.

However, Eberl has made it obvious that Bayern wants Tel to stay with the club.

‘We want to attract the best possible players to Bayern who want the greatest possible success, which is a title,’ Eberl stated in a press conference on Tuesday.

‘Bayern has always done this with amazing foresight and vision. That is why the club is so unique; it has expanded steadily throughout the decades. We will also look into techniques to find good players.

Also, players such as Mathys Tel. It must be feasible to lead Bayern to titles while still developing. We wish to encourage the development of players like Tel.

According to Bild, Tel’s advisor, Gadiri Camara, and Bayern’s sports director, Christoph Freund, had a ‘good’ meeting on Monday to discuss the player’s future with the German club.

It is known that Tel would have considered quitting Bayern if Tuchel had stayed in charge for another season.

Last week, Lothar Matthaus chastised Tuchel for his management of Tel at Bayern.

‘Tel has had a lot of praise from Tuchel, but praise isn’t what the player wants; he needs playing time,’ Matthaus told Abendzeitung Munich.

‘When I saw the lineup in Bochum, I was astounded. Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman are injured, Leroy Sane is injured, and I need speed on the wing, therefore Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller are playing on the wing – but it would have been a Tel game.

‘If three players are out, it’s a slap in the face for a young player when the second centre-forward [Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting] is favored and Musiala and Muller are forced to play places they may not want to.

‘That’s nothing against Thomas Tuchel; he occasionally takes a different approach to players and situations than I do, but in my opinion, Tel should not have played until the final quarter of an hour.

‘Tel, in my opinion, embodies the essence of Bayern Munich.

‘He didn’t get enough playing time, not only in Bochum, but also earlier in the season, when he scored a lot of goals when he came on. He doesn’t always want to be the joker.
