The Washington Commanders are one of several clubs in the league looking for their next quarterback. Last season, second-year standout Sam Howell took on this job, but he failed to establish himself as the team’s long-term quarterback.
At this moment, it’s unclear whether Howell will be Washington’s starting quarterback when the new season begins. However, recently appointed general manager Adam Peters has stated that this is still a viable option for the Commanders.
Washington Commanders’ General Manager Hints to Team’s Quarterback Plan
As of now, Peters is not ruling anything out. In fact, the high-ranking official indicated that the quarterback race in Washington is wide open right now:
“Certainly [how the Commanders will address the position] hasn’t been decided by any stretch of the imagination,” Peters told PFT’s Charean Williams. “We still have much work to do. We truly like what we have in Sam right now, so we’ll do it whether that pick comes first or later. So we’re also quite excited about that.
“Sam came to the facility a couple of weeks ago and got a chance to hang out. Instead of sitting around, we just took a walk. We took a walk around Commanders Park and around the fields and got to know him a little bit better, so I feel really good about him, too. So we’ve got a lot of different things we can do, but still really excited about him.”
It sounds like Howell still has a clear path toward getting another shot to prove his worth. The Commanders clearly haven’t given up on the former North Carolina standout.
Commanders Are Open to Discussing Trade with Bears
Speaking of top quarterbacks, projected No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams will soon learn which team he will play for in 2024. There have been extensive suggestions that the Chicago Bears may trade their No. 1 pick, which appears to be something the Commanders are keeping an eye on.
Peters admits that Washington will, at the very least, conduct due diligence if the first selection suddenly becomes available:
