Sunderland’s stance on Chris Rigg, including his contract and potential price, as Newcastle considers a move.
Newcastle United have been linked with a summer move for Sunderland starlet Chris Rigg.
Newcastle United are once again linked with Sunderland sensation Rigg.
Newcastle United reportedly scouted Rigg in action against QPR in the Championship on Saturday, when Sunderland drew 0-0.
The 16-year-old Hebburn-born midfielder has made 13 Championship appearances this season, scoring one goal.
Chris Rigg’s career so far
Rigg, Sunderland’s youngest ever outfield player, joined the club’s youth academy while still in primary school.
In less than 10 years he’s gone from starting out in the academy to starting for the first-team, making his first-team debut under Tony Mowbray last season.
Rigg now has two goals in 17 total first-team outings for the Black Cats; his goal against Crewe Alexandra in the FA Cup earlier this season made him the youngest-ever scorer in the competition.
Who is interested in Chris Rigg at Sunderland
Newcastle United have been linked with Rigg on and off for the past year or so, with senior scout Mick Tait said to have watched Rigg in action against QPR.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich are among the other teams said to be interested in Rigg.
What is Chris Rigg’s current contractual situation?
Rigg, at 16 years old, is still on a scholarship at the Stadium of Light.
However, Rigg will turn 17 in June, and it has been reported that he has reached an agreement with Sunderland to sign professional terms.
The contents of the pact have yet to be released, and whether it is a binding agreement remains to be seen.
What is Chris Rigg’s potential price tag at Sunderland
This is the tricky one for where Sunderland are concerned.
Any team could come in for Rigg now and pay a compensation fee to Sunderland, which would no doubt be very small in comparison to what his ability and potential would suggest he’s worth.
And there’s been no concrete reveal saying that Sunderland want X amount for Rigg or that they value him at a certain number.
Rigg is valued at only £300,000 on Transfermarkt, but if he signs a professional deal with Sunderland, his transfer worth would undoubtedly skyrocket.
Chris Rigg’s perspective on a prospective summer relocation
Fortunately for Sunderland, it is stated that Rigg believes his growth will be best served there.
That is for the time being, at least, as the Black Cats have clearly shown faith in the youngster by increasing his game time ahead of his 17th birthday and next season.
Rigg made his entire league debut against Leicester City earlier this month, starting two of Sunderland’s past three games and playing 30 minutes as a substitute in the other.
