Newcastle United will be missing Kieran Trippier for a few weeks, but some of his colleagues are nearing full fitness.
Kieran Trippier was forced off during the weekend’s triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers and will now miss the following two games. The 33-year-old will be unavailable for the away visits to Chelsea and Manchester City, although he might return to face West Ham United on March 30th.
It will be a significant loss to be without a player as vital as Trippier, but we have a more than competent alternative in the wings. Tino Livramento, who has spent the majority of his Newcastle career on the opposite side of defence, will be given the opportunity to play at right back.
While Trippier is being treated for his injury, two more Newcastle players are stepping up their efforts to be totally fit and available for selection.
Matt Targett and Elliot Anderson in full Newcastle training on Wednesday
That is according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who has shared an update on who was and was not involved in Newcastle United training on Wednesday.
He stated that there was no Trippier, but Elliot Anderson and Matt Targett were involved.
Downie wrote on X: “Kieran Trippier absent from Newcastle training this morning as he faces a 2/3 weeks on the sidelines with a calf strain. On the positive side for #NUFC both Matt Targett and Elliot Anderson in full training following injuries.”
Newcastle duo get closer to full fitness.
After his back injury, Anderson returned to duty temporarily for the Toon. He scored a penalty in the FA Cup shootout victory over Blackburn Rovers, and he came on as a substitute against Wolves in stoppage time on Saturday.
However, he is clearly not fully fit, since Howe appears to be taking extra precautions with the local lad.
The same goes for Matt Targett, who has yet to appear in a matchday squad despite returning to training more than a week ago. It appears that the club is also taking precautions with the 27-year-old, which is understandable.
But Targett will be keen to be involved as soon as possible, potentially as early as Monday. That is because he will suddenly be the reserve left-back with Tino Livramento being needed on the right and Lewis Hall being unable to feature against his parent club.
While Trippier’s injury has come at a bad time for Hall, it could be great timing for Targett. He is stepping up his bid to get back to full fitness, and the same goes for Anderson.
