The Buffalo Bills have signed Taron Johnson to a three-year contract deal. He is currently the highest-paid nickel back in NFL history.
Taron Johnson has signed a three-year, $31 million contract deal with the Bills. The new agreement involves a guaranteed payment of approximately $14 million.
Johnson, 27, recorded 98 total tackles in 2023, with one sack, three forced fumbles, and one recovered fumble.
Buffalo Bills Key Piece
According to NFL.com, Johnson has become integral to Buffalo’s great defense over the past two seasons. Selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Johnson has registered 201 total tackles (nine tackles for loss), 20 pass defenses, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions (one for a touchdown) in 42 regular-season games (23 starts).
Taron Johnson has become the most highly compensated nickel cornerback in NFL history. He has a three-year, $31 million contract extension with Buffalo, which his agent, Jason Chayut, confirmed.
He surpassed Indianapolis Colts nickel cornerback Kenny Moore II, who recently received a three-year $30 million contract. Johnson beats Moore by a million.
This season, Buffalo Bills fans will pay close attention to head coach Sean McDermott’s defense. Josh Allen and the offense continue to excel, but the defense still requires assistance.
In 2023, the Bills defense ranked 4th in points against and 9th in total yards against. Both are excellent numbers. They also created pressure at a great rate.
Cover1.net stated that one thing the front four did well was create pressure, ranking seventh overall in pressure rate on the season. The Bills blitzed 23.5% of dropbacks on the season, ranking 18th overall.
The problem isn’t the pass defense. It’s rush defense. The Bills rank 28th in the NFL in yards per rush attempt. Taron Johnson will continue to help the pass defense, but hopefully they find some solutions against the run.
