Mike Dodds delivers an update on Chris Rigg amid Newcastle, Manchester United, and Liverpool interest in the Sunderland player.
Rigg excels in his Sunderland debut against Leicester City, despite the team’s setback. Dodds appreciates his excellent level of performance.
Sunderland interim manager Mike Dodds has commended Chris Rigg for his performance against Leicester City, but he claims he is unaware of how contract discussions are developing.
Chris Rigg excels for Sunderland.
The 16-year-old’s skill has long been recognized, and despite his youth, he has spent the past year on the first-team squad.
Unsurprisingly, Sunderland had been cautious with Rigg’s minutes, but Dodds gave him a start against the Foxes, and while the Wearsiders lost 1-0, they played well, particularly in the second half, and Rigg contributed.

Given his breakthrough, it’s no surprise that Rigg has been linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light, particularly as he has yet to sign his first professional contract.
His age has prevented Sunderland from doing that, but he is on a scholarship, so the club would be entitled to compensation if he did decide to leave, which could be decided by a tribunal if the two clubs couldn’t come to an agreement.
Naturally, all connected to the Black Cats want Rigg to agree to a new deal, but reports have claimed the likes of Newcastle, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Manchester United are among the clubs thought to be monitoring the teenager.
So, it’s an interesting period ahead for Rigg, but his display in the week shows he is concentrating on football.
And, speaking to journalist Matty Hewitt, Dodds discussed the midfielder’s outing against the Foxes, but he revealed he couldn’t provide a more concrete update on what the future holds for the player.
