BREAKING: Dallas Cowboys have reached an agreement to sign Dak Prescott on a two-year contract.

Cowboys Predicted to Draft Dak Prescott’s Replacement in the First Round

Dak Prescott has been the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback for the past eight years, but that could come to an end soon. There are already concerns about Prescott’s future because he did not sign a new contract extension, but the Cowboys might make a clear decision to move on in the 2024 NFL draft.

According to Bleacher Report’s most recent round of draft predictions, Brad Gagnon feels the Cowboys will move on from Prescott. In a deep QB draft, Gagnon believes Dallas might select a quarterback in the first round.

Cowboys Predicted to Draft Dak Prescott's Successor in 1st Round

“I believe Dallas is almost done with Dak Prescott, and in this situation, it can apply the final pressure. Recent actions also imply that the Cowboys believe they are good enough to compete in 2024 or are ready to call it quits,” Gagnon said on April 22. “In either event, they don’t need to draft somebody who is sure to make an immediate impact.”

If Dallas wants to move on from Prescott next season, now might be the time. There should be QB potential available late in the first round, but they might take the risk a step further by trading up to a higher pick.

Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix could be available.

Mock drafts are not an effective way to predict where players will be picked. However, they often specify a range. If the Cowboys opt to draft a quarterback, there will most likely be one or two top-tier candidates remaining.

When looking at all of NFL.com’s mock drafts, the majority of them predict that at least one of Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr. will be available at the Cowboys’ 24th overall choice. Nix and Penix faced off twice in the Pac-12 last year, and both had outstanding seasons.

Penix led Washington to the CFP National Championship, passing for 4903 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, according to Sports Reference. Nix passed for 4508 yards, 45 touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Both guys appear to have the potential to make it to the NFL, but they also have downsides. Penix and Nix are older than the average prospect, at 23 and 24 years old, respectively.

Prescott’s message to the Cowboys about his willingness to go for a new team is unclear. Regardless, he will have complete control over the issue. Prescott’s current contract includes a no-trade and no-tag clauses. Dallas has little options for retaining him beyond monetary compensation.
