GOODBYE: Providence Friars forward player signs two-year contract with Sydney Kings.

A 6-foot-6 Chicago State guard has committed to Providence Friars basketball. Who is it?

Providence received a commitment from the Chicago State wing Sunday evening. Cardet made the news during a live stream with The Field of 68.

Cardet is head coach Kim English and the Friars’ fourth transfer commitment since the portal opened in mid-March. The 6-foot-6-inch perimeter player joins Miami guard Bensley Joseph, Saint Joseph’s big man Christ Essandoko, and Georgia wing Jabri Abdur-Rahim in committing to Providence for the 2024-25 season. Cardet and Abdur-Rahim were on campus this weekend and were seen eating at a fancy downtown restaurant late Saturday.

“I feel like we shared a vision for how he sees me in the future,” Cardet said. “I’m going to rock with Coach English. He showed me everything I needed to see.

“He showed me he’s going to push me to be the best player I can be, and that’s all I needed.”

Cardet was a double-figure scorer in each of his two seasons with the Cougars, including 18.7 points per game in 2023-24. He added 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists for Chicago State, a school without a conference home that cobbled together an independent schedule. Cardet and his teammates were tabbed to play in the postseason College Basketball Invitational, and he totaled 55 points in two games against UC-San Diego and Fairfield.

“We don’t get as many resources as some of these other colleges are getting,” Cardet went on to say. “During that process as a team, you’ve really got to ignore all of that and just stick together.”

The Cougars upset city rival Northwestern and defeated Stetson, which went on to win its conference tournament and advance to March Madness. Cardet scored 30 points against the Wildcats, who had entered the national polls by the time the game began in mid-December. It was one of 12 occasions when Cardet scored at least 20 points against Division I opponents last season.

“I’m most successful at the lead guard — the one or two position,” he remarked. “Someone who can lead the offense and make plays for my teammates. “I can easily get into the paint and make excellent decisions.”

The Friars have an apparent perimeter need with Devin Carter declaring for the NBA Draft and Ticket Gaines having used up his NCAA eligibility. Carter was named Big East Player of the Year in large part because to his overall impact on league games, as he was a two-way threat who could score and defend. Cardet stated that he aspires to improve his outside shooting and have more of a skill set for stopping opposition guards and wings.
