REPORT: Michigan Wolverines are about to lose a star player as part of contract extension.

Michigan tight end and running back enter the NCAA transfer portal.

The NCAA transfer site will reopen on April 16th and will remain open until April 30th, and the Wolverines have already lost two depth players, tight end Josh Beetham and running back Danny Hughes.

Beetham attended the University of Michigan for three years, earning a letter in each season. He spent the majority of his time on special teams but also played as a blocking tight end in 2023. His departure has minimal impact on the top of the roster, where Colston Loveland is projected to receive All-American honours, but there was speculation that Beetham would emerge as the number two option.

Without the veteran in the room, Michigan will now turn to Marlin Klein as the de facto backup. Klein has just one career catch but there is optimism surrounding his talent as the second tight end on the depth chart. Beetham is entering the portal as a grad transfer with two years of eligibility left.

Beetham is the second Michigan tight end to enter the portal following the 2023-2024 season after Matthew Hibner departed for SMU in the Winter.

Beetham has already reported offers from New Mexico State, Ball State, and Bowling Green on X (previously Twitter).

Danny Hughes has been with the programme as a preferred walk-on since 2020 and has played an important role in the special team’s efforts since then. Hughes has two tackles at Michigan and nine rushing attempts for 48 yards in 33 games. Hughes was on various special teams units, but his departure has little impact on the team’s plans for next season because he was not projected to be a significant part of the running back rotation. Hughes, like Beetham, has filed his name as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining.
