NASCAR comments on a waiver for Kyle Larson
Kyle Larson will need a waiver to qualify for the 2024 NASCAR Playoffs
On Sunday, Kyle Larson attempted to run two races in one day. First, the Indy 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. Then, he’s busy day of racing would conclude in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.
Hear from NASCAR below.
1,100 miles of racing were part of the plan. Unfortunately, Larson only completed 500 miles of it.
The Indycar Series event saw rain move into the area during the scheduled green flag. That pushed back the start of the event by several hours.
Rick Hendrick made the decision to let he No. 5 driver run the Indy 500 event. Noting, he was also a co-owner of the Indycar entry.

When the checkered flag dropped on the Indy 500, the Coca-Cola 600 was already underway. Justin Allgaier was selected to start the race in the No. 5.
Larson was quickly taken to the airport. He flew all the way to North Carolina. And within minutes of him landing, rain also rolled in the North Carolina area.
NASCAR was forced to throw the red flag due to weather. After multiple hours, they were unable to resume to the race. Larson never turned a lap.
The No. 5 driver was the points leader heading into Charlotte. However, as Allgaier started the race, Larson was not given any points for the event and he’s now dropped to 3rd in the standings.
But, there’s bigger problems than that. Per NASCAR rules, drivers must run every points paying event to be eligible for the playoffs. Despite him qualifying for the playoffs via two race wins.

Elton Sawyer comments
“To my knowledge, I haven’t seen a request come through,” Elton Sawyer stated Tuesday via Sirius XM NASCAR Radio of Hendrick Motorsports submitting a waiver request.
“I’m sure at some point, they will send in that request. This will be a decision that not just one person will make but a group will look at it, discuss it and move forward.”
NASCAR has been relaxed on handing out waivers in the past. However, this is a unique situation that they haven’t been presented with prior.
“He has missed a race. It’s a little bit uncharted waters for us because in the past, the waivers have been mostly given for a medical reason. So, this one’s a little bit different.”
“We’ve had some preliminary discussions. But, we haven’t landed.”
Without weather, Larson would have been able to run both events.
“There was a timeline that was all laid out. If everything went as planned, Indy goes off at 12:45pm. All that goes well, then Kyle’s able to get on helicopters, airplanes, golf carts and all that stuff.”
“Our green flag starting time of 6:20pm. All of that was going to play out and be a great story line. Unfortunately, mother nature was in the middle of that.”
“We’ll deal with all that accordingly. We know a lot more today than we did on Sunday at midnight. We’ll reconvene once the request comes in and we’ll figure out the next steps.”
As of the time this is posted, no announcement has been made on a decision.
