In one of the funniest NASCAR mishaps in recent memory, Christopher Bell inadvertently revealed that the new driver replacing Martin Truex Jr. after his retirement was “Chase.”
Because Bell did not specify which Chase he was referring to (Chase Briscoe, for the record), Kyle Larson quickly turned to Twitter to make a joke.
“This news has really taken me by surprise, man! “Best wishes to Chase Elliott on his new adventure at Joe Gibbs Racing,” Larson said on Twitter.
At the track at New Hampshire, reporters caught up with Larson and he was still having a good laugh over the misdirection tweet.
“I was like really proud of it,” Larson told FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass. “I was typing it so fast I couldn’t wait to get it out there. No, I mean I texted Bell and Briscoe I think before I even sent that tweet that I was dying laughing, because it was hilarious.”
Christopher Bell’s miscue gave away the goods on Briscoe, though many had assumed he was the likeliest candidate to step in for Truex. Truex announced he’d be retiring after the 2024 season recently.
For his part, Larson was happy to lend a hand in expanding the reach of Bell’s accidental reveal.
“I mean that’s the greatest way to announce somebody coming to a team, I think,” Larson said with a big smile. “I’m sure PR departments are planning this extravagant, you know, very professional thing, but they got way more clicks for that then once they finally do announce it.”
As for trusting Christopher Bell with any of his news, Larson didn’t seem that defensive. He’d give the No. 20 driver a pass and assume he’s learned his lesson.
“I’m sure he’ll be on much higher awareness now,” Larson said. “So yeah, I think you could probably trust him going forward.”
