Creedence Clearwater Revival Scores A New Album On Multiple Charts

  • Creedence Clearwater Revival didn’t last long as a band, but their legacy has remained strong for decades. It’s likely that the majority of people who know and love their music learned of them after they split, as it’s now been more than half a century since the musicians went their separate ways for good.

The group hasn’t reformed, and they didn’t drop a collection of previously unreleased material…but they’re still scoring new wins on the Billboard charts. Creedence Clearwater Revival debuts an album on three different rankings this week, adding to their list of wins, but the project isn’t actually “new,” at least not in the ears of millions of longtime listeners.

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Willy and the Poorboys arrives on a trio of Billboard lists, 55 years after it was originally released. The set arrived in 1969, and it was the third full-length from the band that year. Smashes like “Down on the Corner” and “Fortunate Son” made it a bestseller.

Willy and the Poorboys starts highest on the Vinyl Albums chart, where it enters at No. 21. The same project also debuts on both the Top Album Sales (No. 45) and Top Rock & Alternative Albums (No. 48) rankings as well.

In the past tracking period, Willy and the Poorboys sold a little more than 4,500 copies throughout the U.S. That’s a huge sum for a half-century-old title, and it’s a sum that even some new offerings from current-day stars can’t manage in their best weeks.

Some eagle-eyed fans may notice a small difference in how the album title is spelled in this article. On the Billboard charts, Poorboysis presented as one word. When it comes to other platforms, such as Spotify, the two are separated. This piece uses the usage on the Billboard tallies, since it’s focused on the set’s performance on those rankings.
Willy and the Poorboys has been celebrated in the rock media lately as its anniversary arrives. Fans have been consuming the project for decades, but this past frame was clearly special to them. Vinyl-selling platform Vinyl Me, Please released a special version not long ago, and that is likely playing a role in the title’s continued—and growing—success.
