Former Texas wide receiver Johntay Cook dismissed from Washington Huskies
The former nationally-heralded recruit was expected to be a breakout star this year.
Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Johntay Cook II showed flashes of greatness on the field as a freshman in 2023, but his sophomore season didn’t go as planned.
Cook “mutually parted ways,” with the Longhorns in early November after playing in six games. He entered the transfer portal in December, where the Washington Huskies picked him up.
But according to multiple reports, Washington has already parted ways with Cook. According to 247Sports Washington insider, Scott Eklund the move comes after Cook met with head coach Jedd Fisch on Monday. On3 Sports Business and transfer portal reporter Pete Nakos said the wide receiver was on campus for 48 hours before the decision to part ways.
Cook was a member of the 2022 UIL Class 6A state championship-winning Desoto High School team, where he caught 84 passes for 1,469 yards and 22 touchdowns his senior year. ESPN ranked Cook as the No. 6 wide receiver prospect nationally, and 247Sports rated him as a five-star recruit. The wideout received 40 offers, choosing Texas over Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Oregon and Michigan.
As a freshman, Cook caught eight passes for 136 yards through 14 games, including a career-long 51-yard reception against Baylor. He caught eight passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns at Texas before transferring to Washington.
“It was mutual between the two of us,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told reporters of Cook’s departure back in November. “We have nothing but respect for him and his family.”
