Just now: Sofia Goggia crashes in final downhill training at alpine worlds – Lindsey Vonn clocks 21th time

The PyeongChang 2018 gold medalist didn’t suffer any injuries but looked shaken. “It’s never nice to fall at 120 km/h,” she said.

Italy’s alpine ski star Sofia Goggia crashed at high speed during the last downhill training run at the World Championships in Saalbach, Austria, on Friday (7 February).

The two-time Olympic medallist lost her balance while landing after a jump in the lower section of the Ulli Maier course but managed to stay on her skis, sliding down on her side. She stood up soon after and skied to the finish line on her own.

“I took a risk on that jump, I jumped badly, I jumped crooked. Luckily, nothing serious happened. Clearly, it’s never nice to fall at 120 km/h,” Goggia told reporters after the incident.

She then added: “I probably didn’t have my skis flat enough, so I ended up jumping long and crooked.”

Fortunately, the 32-year-old, who finished fifth in Thursday’s Super-G, avoided injury: “No problem with my side, at most just a bit of pressure on my knee, but all good. I mean, I landed and was immediately able to get onto my side.”

At the final time check, Goggia was 0.67 seconds behind Ester Ledecká, who recorded the fastest run. “Clearly, this is a course where I’ve never really managed to excel in any section or training run. So today, I’ll do a further analysis, and tomorrow we’ll put everything we have on the course—without too much pressure at this point.

“The split times matter, and I was definitely behind in all of them—by a little or a lot, two-tenths, a few hundredths—I was always just a bit more behind.”

Meanwhile, U.S. ski legend Lindsey Vonn clocked the 21st-fastest time in her third training run, one day after hitting her arm against a gate in the Super-G.

The 40-year-old tested new settings but struggled to find her speed, finishing 2.32 seconds off the pace. She was greeted with warm applause from Austrian fans as she crossed the finish line. That follows a 20th- and 29th-place finish in her first two training runs.
