Garwey Dual, a former Providence Friars guard, is currently in the NBA draft process for 2024, trying to become a one-and-done after a lackluster first year under coach Kim English.
Dual recommitted to Providence after coach Ed Gooley left for Georgetown, but the 6’5 guard averaged only 3.3 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 18.5 minutes per game with the Friars, shooting 40% from two and 25% from three.
Dual, who has a very long wingspan of 7’0, demonstrated why he was such a highly desired recruit out of high school by scoring 11 points, four steals, and three assists in a scrimmage on Saturday at the NBA Combine.
Dual stated that he has not concentrated on the transfer portal at all because he is completely absorbed in the NBA draft process, but if he does not receive the response he desires, he intends to return to college and hunt for a team that will allow him to play point guard.
The point guard market has cleared out dramatically in the last week or so, with AJ Hoggard joining Vanderbilt as the most recent lead guard to commit.
Dual is currently one of the highest upside guards available in the portal, and here is a list of five programs that might use a point guard, beginning with a fellow Big East school:
Dual is a native of Houston but he did play some high school ball in Carmel, Indiana, and a move to Butler could allow him to start at point guard while staying in the Big East.
Thad Matta’s team saw guards Posh Alexander (Dayton) and DJ Davis (Washington) depart via the portal, and the only guard replacement so far is Tulane’s Kolby King who is more of an off guard than a true point guard.
Dual’s best bet to start at point guard for a high major program may well be at Butler, and while the program has not been elite lately they have produced NBA talent and have the opportunity Dual is looking for.
Another option to remain in the Big East is at Seton Hall, a program decimated by eight departures via the transfer portal – including star guards Kadary Richmond and Dre Davis who went to St. John’s and Ole Miss, respectively.
Shaheen Holloway has added two guards in the portal, Chaunce Jenkins from Old Dominion and Zion Harmon from Bethune-Cookman, but Dual is better than both and would give the Pirates a tough, high upside guard with Big East experience.
For Dual, a chance to play in Holloway’s defensive scheme and take on a role similar to Richmond should help boost his draft stock.
Syracuse is the only team on this list who seems to have a point guard in place, having added Hofstra transfer Jaquan Carlos to replace Judah Mintz (NBA) and Quadir Copeland (McNeese).
Carlos averaged 6.3 assists per game last year for the Pride, but Dual could give him a serious run for playing time at the true point guard position – and would compliment returnee JJ Starling as well.
Syracuse is in the hunt for more guard depth, and Dual could thrive in the ACC and in a program that produces NBA talent with regularity.
Dual played high school ball at Southern California Academy, and if he’s wanting to return to some warmer weather perhaps joining Bobby Hurley at Arizona State is in the cards.
The Sun Devils lost Frankie Collins to TCU, Jose Perez is out of eligibility, and Jamiyea Neal transferred to Creighton – leaving a lot of room for playing time in the backcourt.
ASU brought in Alston Mason, who averaged 3.6 assists per game at Missouri State, as well as seldom used Ole Miss guard Austin Nunez, but Dual could easily be offered a chance to start at point guard in this system – and with the program moving to the Big 12 he would get a chance to strut his stuff against the best teams in college basketball.
