Breaking news New York Yankees Sign Former Dom Smith to Minor League Deal

The New York Yankees have signed first baseman Dominic Smith to a minor league contract, as reported by Jack Curry of the YES Network.

Smith, 29, was originally selected by the New York Mets with the 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. He spent six seasons with the Mets, achieving his best performance during the shortened 2020 season, where he posted a .993 OPS with 10 home runs in 50 games.

In the 2024 season, Smith played for both the Boston Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds. With the Red Sox, he appeared in 83 games, recording a .237 batting average, a .317 on-base percentage, and a .390 slugging percentage, along with six home runs and 34 RBIs. After being released by Boston in August, he signed with the Reds, where he played nine games before being designated for assignment in early September.

The Yankees recently signed veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year, $12.5 million deal to replace Anthony Rizzo, who has struggled with injuries. Smith’s addition provides the team with additional depth at first base. Given his left-handed bat and defensive capabilities, he will likely compete for a roster spot during Spring Training.

Smith’s career has seen fluctuations in performance, but his potential remains evident. His signing adds depth to the Yankees’ roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
