One of the best attributes about the Texas athletic program is how the various coaches support each other.

Each Longhorns head coach is expected to compete for national championships, and so everyone knows the struggle.

Men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry revealed Monday that he’s been in constant contact with football coach Steve Sarkisian all season long. Terry, like a lot of other UT football fans, was proud of the Horns’ 13-3 season in the first year of the SEC.

“I send a text after every game to Sark about his team, how proud we are, how hard they compete and an example that they set on this campus in terms of way they compete in their competitions,” Terry told reports during a Zoom call to talk about his game Wednesday at Oklahoma.

I. reference those guys to our team all the time. They had an incredible season this year. And as much as we want to look at the offense, I think offense was good, and I thought that we executed at a high level on the offensive end, our defense was lights out. And it gave our team a chance to win a national championship, because they played lights out every night. And we were really hard to score against
In team sports, if you have a stellar top defense in the country, you got a chance to win a national championship,” Terry continued. “So, I think to echo that same thing to our team, we have to try to have a team that really hangs your head on being good defensively every night, and if you do that, you’ll give yourself a chance to win more than you lose.

“I echoed to Sark that I thought they were good enough to win the whole thing, and they had an incredible season. But that defense, man, was incredible. Those guys played lights out again. I thought our offense did a great job, put us in great position as well, and they’re to be committed to that as well.

“But yeah, we’re real supportive one another. I try to stay in contact with those guys and let them know.”

Terry has been at Texas long enough to know that good football usually leads to good athletic years all around. He’s been at UT when the Horns were winning big under Mack Brown. And he’s seen when things weren’t going to good during the 2010s.

“Hey, when football wins on campus, it’s nothing like it,” Terry said. “I mean, look, we love all our sports on campus, we support all our sports. But football wins at a high level, the morale on campus, in the city. I’ve been here, we will won the whole thing with Mack Brown. It’s just at another level. And we’re at that point right now.
So kudos those guys for a great season,” Terry added. “And you take your hat off to what they were able to do out there on the gridiron field for us this season.”
