Ohio State Wins The National Championship!!!
In a game that will go down in history as one of the greatest upsets in college football history, the Ohio State Buckeyes stunned the college football world by defeating the Miami Hurricanes 31-to-24 in double overtime. The Buckeyes, led by sawy veteran safety Mike Doss, linebacker Matt Wilhelm, quarterback Craig Krenzel, wide receiver Michael Jenkins, and two-way star Chris Gamble, were joined by upstart freshman running back Maurice Clarett.
Having narrowly escaped defeat during the regular season in a handful of games, the Buckeyes came into the National Championship as severe underdogs. Vegas believed the Buckeyes were 12-point dogs, and rightfully so. Miami was on a 34-game win streak and had won the National Championship in the previous season.
None of this deterred Jim Tressel, who was in his second season at the helm of the Buckeyes. Coupled with some memorable plays like the Clarret strip off of a turnover, and the Krenzel pass to Jenkins on 4th and 14 in overtime to keep the game alive, the final play was pure jubilation for Ohio State fans, who had not celebrated a National Championship since 1970, the last of five won under the guidance of Woody Hayes.
For younger Buckeye fans, especially those of us who lived through the 1990’s, this game was a dream come true as we watched our favorite team win the biggest game during our lifetime.
