Record label boss plans to turn 19th century cottage that inspired Led Zeppelin into its own country as he declares independence from the UK

The owner of a remote Welsh cottage which inspired Led Zeppelin has declared independence from the UK, setting up his own country.

Scott Roe, owner of Bron-Yr-Aur in Eryri, Snowdonia, wants to turn his iconic cottage and the land surrounding it into a micronation.

He has created passports and has plans for taxes and embassies across the world.

The Bron-Yr-Aur cottage was used as a holiday home in the 1950s by the family of Robert Plant and the Led Zeppelin frontman returned to the cottage in the 1970s with his bandmates.

Mr Roe is a former record label boss turned ecologist and singer-songwriter.

He formed the idea while writing a song about John Lennon’s vision of finding Nutopia – a utopian country with no laws ‘other than cosmic’, The Sun reported.

A flag and coat of arms have been designed for the new micronation and Mr Roe is working on composing a national anthem.

The nation’s income will come from wealthy backers and selling citizenship to members of the public.

During their stay at the cottage in the 70s, Led Zeppelin used the cottage as a retreat to write music and escape from the crowds of fans who followed them around the country.

It was in the idyllic setting that the band wrote some of their most famous hits, including Stairway to Heaven and Bron-Yr_Aur Stomp.

The cottage has subsequently become a treasured location of rock folklore and attracts thousands of fans every year.

Mr Roe said he has welcomed fans from all over the world including families from Vietnam who spent their life savings on a pilgrimage to his cottage.

The house still draws its water from the same stream it did in the seventies. It has a small hydroelectric generator and wind turbine to produce its energy and it is 80 per cent self-sufficient for food.

There is no broadband cable, and no mobile phone signal.

Amongst his plans for his new country, he will give away at least five per cent in foreign aid, more than any other nation in the world.

Although 50 per cent of the foreign aid budget is due to be spent on the nation’s first embassy, a few miles away in the town of Machynlleth.

Mr Roe said: ‘Everyone will get a vote but the founders will have more of a say. There will be elections and people can vote in some way.

‘Creativity, sustainability and well-being will be the pillars of the new state. People can come here and learn how we do things.

‘We are turning the priorities that nations have on their head. We will have health, prescriptions, music and creativity and foreign aid at the top of our agenda.

‘We have to follow protocol to become a state. We will have to contact other countries and ask for them to recognise us.’

Mr Roe has planned to write letters to Sir Keir Starmer and King Charles, asking for recognition as a state.

The former record label owner retreated to his quite life in Wales after a business meeting in Cannes in 2010 where he realised he had become a ‘suit’ and was not helping artists anymore.

He moved to his wife’s holiday home of Bron-Yr-Aur, where the family already owned land and had created their own nature reserve.

Here, he followed in the footsteps of Led Zeppelin and began writing music, which he had not done since his youth.

Last year under his stage name Boohai, he released an album called Entropy For Beginners, collaborating with artists from across the globe.

Once while staying at the cottage, he discovered a plectrum that belonged to Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

By chance, Page showed up to the cottage unannounced just ten days later.

It was the rockstar’s first visit to the cottage since his trip with the band in the 70s.

Mr Roe said Jimmy Page was ‘blessed’ that he had been able to find the cottage again and even helped him look for the lost plectrum.

An open initiation has been created, giving people the chance to become one of 25 founding members of the new nation.

Their participation will not make up a government, but will be a way of sharing the load of responsibilities.

Micronations are miniature, self-proclaimed independent states that are not recognised by other sovereign states.

The Principality of Sealand is a micronation in the North Sea, located off the coast of England.

It is one of the most well-known micronations in the world.
