Thompson’s choice to sign with the Dallas Mavericks came as bit of a surprise inside NBA circles, especially since most clued-in analysts anticipated he would join LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.
It was a choice that not everyone approved with, including his own father, and some still feel he will struggle to get the same number of important minutes in Dallas as he had with the Lakers.
However, not everyone has been critical of the move, with former NBA player Rashad McCants stating that he fully understands Klay Thompson’s decision.
Was pressure a factor in Thompson’s decision?
Rashad McCants claims Thompson avoided the Lakers because of the immense pressure that the legendary team faces on an annual basis.
According to sources close to Thompson, he desired a new start and considered joining the Lakers as similar to sticking with the Warriors.
“Klay is not going to come out and say it’s terrible business with the Warriors,” McCants stated on the Gil’s Arena podcast.
“The group is doing some dubious things. Klay is sitting back, thinking, ‘Do I really want to go back to something like this?’ That is why he did not sign with the Lakers.
“There’s too much pressure.”
Warriors’ supporters were similarly dissatisfied.
Warriors fans are naturally unhappy by the split of the Splash Brothers.
Thompson, who spent 13 years and four titles with the Warriors, is expected to join the M avericks, establishing another big three with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Klay Thompson inked a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks. The Mavericks traded two second-round selections to the Warriors, and Josh Green joined the Charlotte Hornets.
