Hamilton won his 104th Grand Prix at Silverstone, beating Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to the finish line.

It was his first win in 945 days, with his last coming in the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

It was one of the most memorable athletic events of the year, with Hamilton receiving a euphoric greeting from the crowd as he crossed the finish line.

The 39-year-old, who is leaving Mercedes at the end of the year to join Ferrari, was emotional over team radio with race engineer Peter Bonnington.

The seven-time world champion burst into tears during his post-race interview, something he said had never occurred to him after any of his previous 103 race victories.

Brazilian journalist Felipe Kieling asked Hamilton if he had ever sobbed after a race, to which he answered, “No, I don’t think I have.

“With 2021 [losing the title to Verstappen in the last race], knowing how difficult the past few years have been, I believe there is both happiness and sorrow behind those tears.” Finally, simply express your thanks. I’m simply very grateful.

“I’m also proud of myself and our team. There have been numerous times when I doubted my ability to perform what I did today. That’s a difficult thing to accept.

“Today demonstrated that I don’t have to tolerate that.”

Following a rough start to 2024, hints of a Mercedes recovery have surfaced in recent weeks, with Hamilton and teammate George Russell demonstrating increased performance.

Russell won in Austria last month and qualified on pole at Silverstone, but Hamilton passed him early on, forcing the younger Brit to withdraw in fourth place due to a water system issue.
