Horwich kids demonstrated the club’s bright future with strong results at the English Schools’ Athletics Association National Track and Field Championships in Birmingham.

Harrison Stokes won the Intermediate Boys’ 1500m steeplechase in 4 minutes and 19 seconds, while Ben Topham ran 4:42.58. Benjamin Hall performed admirably in the Senior Boys’ 2,000m steeplechase, coming second in 6:08.94. Joel Ige ran 11.46 in the Junior Boys’ 100m heats, and Chidera Ajet finished 6cm short of the medal in the Junior Boys’ long jump. Alistair Shorrock raced 22.90 in the Intermediate Boys’ 200m, and Amelie Smethurst demonstrated she will be a valuable addition to the red and black ranks by reaching the 3,000m final.

In Leigh, the latest round of the Northern Track and Field League was a resounding success. Rick Cordwell had a busy schedule, jumping 4.84m in the long jump, throwing the hammer 16.72m, and launching the shot 7.84m, all of which earned him second place. Lucas James finished third in the 100m (11.9 seconds), while Luke Ashworth ran 12.5 seconds. They followed up with 24.7 and 26.6 seconds in the 200m, respectively.Noah Burrell (2:02.8) and Max Winstanley (2:09.4) finished second in their 800m events, while Phil Ryan came in third with 4:44.5 in the 1500m. Rob Walsh won silver medals in the 1500m (4:46.2) and 5,000m (17:57.9), while Felix Taylor dominated the throwing events, finishing second in the javelin (34.68m) and winning the shot putt (12.40m) and discus (31.36m). Omotoysi Osijonwo finished second in the triple jump, jumping 12.06m, while Shannon Knott and Courtney Iredale were inseparable in the 100m, crossing the line in 14.1 seconds. Iredale then equaled Emma Bradley’s 200m mark of 29.1s, finishing third and first in their respective events. Bradley followed up with 64.3 seconds and a silver medal in the Tia Harris also finished second in the 400m (73.2). Harris won the 800m in 2:55.7, tying Bethany Reid’s (2:22.6) win in the A event. Reid dominated the 3,000 metres, winning by about a minute (11:22.4).In the field events, Blythe Cordwell finished second in the A long jump competition (4.23m), while Iredale (3.45m) shared first place in the B competition. Cordwell went on to finish third in the hammer (28.34 metres).The English fell running championships continued in the Lake District with possibly the most difficult fell event on the programme, Wasdale. This 21-mile (9,022-foot) giant covers some of the most difficult terrain in the sport’s spiritual heartland.

Luke Foley was comfortably in the top 20 after the first several checkpoints until hitting the proverbial wall two hours later when navigating the daunting peaks of Pillar, Great Gable, and Scafell Pike, finishing in 63rd (4:52:11).

Nick Leigh shown experience by starting slowly and gradually increasing his effort, eventually finishing 38th overall and fourth M45 in 4:33:50. Julian Goudge finished eighth in the M50 (5:08:08).

Gareth Webb won the MV65 category at the Wilmslow Summer 10k in 40:42, the same week he was picked to represent England at the Mid Cheshire 5k in August. Colin Rigby ran his first 10k in years, breaking 40 minutes (39:33) and finishing fourth MV55, while Chris Fielding splitthe gap between his team-mates, finishing in 40:11
