Amidst injuries at training camp, the Chiefs Sign a Surprise Rookie.

After a productive workout, TE Geor’Quarius Spivey was reportedly signed by the Chiefs in an unexpected roster move that occurred late Thursday afternoon.

Though Spivey is best known for a contentious NCAA ruling that declared him ineligible for the whole 2023 season despite Spivey’s insistence that he followed the precise directions of his academic advisor and NCAA, he was a former TCU teammate of fourth-round choice Jared Wiley.

After a string of injuries this week, Kansas City evidently recognized enough potential in Spivey to bring him in for the duration of training camp even though he only caught 28 passes for 298 yards and one touchdown during his four years of college.

The Chiefs had more spaces to work with when several players had injuries during practice, and they were impressed with Spivey. Talented and a follower of the ‘no stone left unturned’ concept, Brett Veach couldn’t pass up the chance to add a prospective contributor that was neglected.

With Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, Irv Smith Jr., and Wiley already in the tight end room, it’s difficult to see how Spivey will immediately fit in with the club. Nevertheless, if Spivey continues to show promise over the coming weeks, he may end up on the practice squad as a developmental player.

After starting his career at Mississippi State, Spivey transferred to TCU for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He saw limited playing time due to Wiley’s presence but at six-foot-five and 240-pounds, Spivey has the prerequisite size to theoretically fill the Blake Bell blocking role while providing the occasional pass-catching threat.

In all likelihood, this acquisition won’t have any significant impact on the team in 2024 or beyond. That doesn’t mean Spivey isn’t worth throwing a dart, and the Chiefs intend to find out if the rest of the NFL accidentally slept on a hidden gem.
