Another Friar gets called by an NBA team; who is it and what team will he play for?

Devin Carter will have some Providence College company as he tries to make a first impression in the NBA ranks for the 2024-25 season. Josh Oduro has accepted to a summer league contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. The Friars announced the deal early Friday, and their graduate big man will join the roster next month for a two-week stint in Las Vegas. Oduro was impressive in his one season with Providence, averaging 15.9 points and 7.5 rebounds.

He was named an honorable mention to the Big East’s playoff team after ranking in the top ten in a variety of categories. Oduro was a two-time all-conference selection with George Mason in the Atlantic 10, before deciding to transfer and accompany coach Kim English to his new job with the Friars.

“Josh is a special player,” English said in a statement. “This season he competed against some of the top players in the country in the Big East and he put up impressive numbers.”

Oduro was an all-tournament selection at the Portsmouth Invitational and played in the NABC All-Star game at the Final Four in Phoenix. He shot 56.7% from 2-point range and was inside the national top-325 in block percentage, offensive- rebounding percentage and defensive-rebounding percentage. Oduro posted five double-doubles in 34 games with Providence, which went 21-14 overall and reached the NIT.

Carter was the 13th overall selection in the NBA Draft, going to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night. He was the third of eight players from the conference who heard his name called — four in the first round, four in the second. Oduro posted one of his nine 20-point games last season against one of Carter’s fellow lottery picks — Connecticut center Donovan Clingan went to the Portland Trail Blazers at No. 7.
