Braves News: Atlanta signs experienced catcher and returns reliever to add depth.
The Braves have made a handful of recent roster adjustments to increase their depth.
The Braves have now added a seasoned catcher to serve as insurance in Triple-A. In addition, the Braves re-signed a right-handed pitcher to strengthen their organizational bullpen.
The Braves have signed veteran catcher Sandy Leon.
The now-13-year veteran last played for the world champion Texas Rangers last season. In 2023, he played in only 21 games and had a.146/.186/.195 line. Leon will almost definitely remain in Gwinnett unless d’Arnaud or Tromp sustain an injury before Murphy returns from the IL.
Leon is a well-traveled catcher who has previously played for the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins in the National League East. He has 31 career home runs and a batting average slightly above the Mendoza line. Leon’s current career bWAR is 0.8, so even if he is called up to the Major Leagues, don’t expect him to produce much.
Jackson Stephens was re-signed to a minor league contract.
In other news, Atlanta reunited with a popular long reliever from the previous few years. Stephens was just released to make place for Jesse Chavez right before the season began. Stephens is currently on the Gwinnett roster, joining the Braves’ excellent crop of relievers in Triple-A.
Stephens pitched 12 innings last year, and had a 3.00 ERA AND 3.76 FIP. Stephens has been yo-yo’d in and out the organization recently, but he remains a well respected member of the clubhouse.
