It does not appear that Dak Prescott will receive the record-breaking contract extension he was expecting for from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.
Owner Jerry Jones and company appear content with the reigning NFL MVP runner-up finishing out the final year of his deal and hitting free agency next summer. Dallas faces a risk since it cannot apply the franchise tag on the star signal caller.
With that in mind, a new report suggests that the ‘Boys are a “sleeper” team who will select a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft in less than two weeks.
There is a lot to consider when it comes to Prescott and his changing relationship with the Cowboys. The 31-year-old signal caller will count $55.46 million against next season’s salary cap.
Dallas was unable to reach an agreement on an extension with Prescott prior to NFL free agency. This left them out in the cold when it came to acquiring top-tier players following the Cowboys’ heartbreaking playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers in January.
If Dallas believed Prescott was the long-term quarterback, it would have done everything necessary to extend him before March. By doing so, the Cowboys would have been able to develop more talent around him. Could this result in a divorce following the 2024 NFL season? One significant name appears to believe that is a serious possibility.

On Friday, the former general manager of the New York Jets appeared on ESPN’s “Get Up” show and offered an intriguing perspective. He compared the cap number for a first-round quarterback on his rookie deal to what Prescott would earn on a long-term contract. Check it out.
We’ve seen how the San Francisco 49ers have been able to create a roster with Brock Purdy on his rookie contract.
Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, for example, led their clubs to the Super Bowl while still on rookie contracts.
Dallas is really concerned about this. The team must seriously consider extending wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons. Given their track records, both are expected to reset the market in their respective positions.
Dallas is set to select 24th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Unless a huge trade up the draft board occurs, it is unlikely to land one of the top four quarterbacks in the annual event. This leaves Michael Penix Jr. as the most likely candidate if owner Jerry Jones and Co. take this approach.
