The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue has revealed he “went off the rails” with drinking and smoking after his bandmate Mark Sheehan died aged 46-years-old last year following a brief illness. His death was announced in April last year as the band tweeted: “Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness.
“The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time,” they added before signing off. Now Danny, 43, has opened up about the difficult time in his life as he navigated losing his best friend and bandmate.
During an appearance on Sunday Brunch on 26 May, the Irish singer told hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer that he turned to alcohol and smoking in the wake of Mark’s death.
He told them: “We lost him last year, God rest his soul. I suppose after that it was a crazy year, I went off the rails a little bit, drinking and smoking. Men trying to get over grief, you do a lot of stupid things. I had writer’s block, I didn’t know if we would continue on as a band.”
The Voice judge went on to explain that after a “bender” over Christmas last year and experiencing depression, Danny decided to get out his cycle and change his life.
He told Simon and Tim that he stopped drinking alcohol and smoking and started working out three days a week to help himself.
