The Dallas Cowboys face a historic offseason with so many possibly franchise-changing decisions to make.
Owner Jerry Jones has stated that the Cowboys are “all-in” for 2024 and have opted to keep Mike McCarthy for one more season to see if he can bring the quality group past the first round of the playoffs and maybe fulfill Jones’ Super Bowl ambitions.
After a terrific regular season in which Dallas won the NFC East with a (12-5) record and earned home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs, the Cowboys were overwhelmed by a young, resurgent Green Bay Packers squad.
Suddenly one of the league’s top defenses couldn’t stop the run and allowed first-year starting QB Jordan Love to look like Patrick Mahomes, while Dak Prescott and the offense sputtered which was rare for 2023.

Jerry Jones has made it clearly apparent that the Cowboys intend to keep Prescott as their franchise starter, and he is likely to become one of the highest-paid players in the NFL with a new contract, which could be signed anytime between now and training camp.
Although some rolled their eyes when Jerry Jones and company decided to fire Kellen Moore at the end of last season — he’s regarded as one of the up and coming young and brilliant offensive minds — head coach Mike McCarthy took over play calling, and the Dallas Cowboys offense looked elite for the majority of the season.
Finally, Prescott and CeeDee Lamb found the perfect chemistry and emerged as arguably the top QB/WR tandem in the league.
Beyond Dak Prescott and the explosive offense that averaged 389 yards and 30 points per game and finished with 77 touchdowns in the regular season, the Dallas Cowboys had a defense that finished the season ranked 5th in the NFL.
The Cowboys will approach 2024 under greater pressure than ever, from head coach to quarterback. Prescott is set to receive a record-breaking extension, and Lamb is also slated to receive one shortly, but none of this will matter if the team is unable to win in crucial situations.
Dallas Cowboys Give QB Trey Lance Roster Bonus, Will Keep Him Until 2024 As A Possible Dak Prescott Backup
Quarterback Trey Lance will remain with the Dallas Cowboys in 2024 and will receive a $4.25 million roster bonus, per the Dallas Morning News‘ Calvin Watkins.
The roster bonus will give Lance $5.31 million in total compensation for the 2024 season. According to Watkins, Dallas did not consider cutting Lance after he made “tremendous strides” last year.
The Dallas Cowboys won’t, however, pick up Trey Lance’s $22.4 million fifth-year option for the 2025 season, Watkins reported, but it’s interesting to see if this may be a contingency plan if things go South for Prescott.
Lance, the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, has played in just eight games in his career. In six games as a rookie, he had 603 passing yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. He played in just two games in 2022, recording 194 passing yards before suffering an ankle injury that kept him out the rest of the season.
Lance is entering the third season of a four-year, $34.1 million contract that he signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2022.
Trey Lance was dealt to the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the 2024 season in return for a fourth-round pick, as Brock Purdy rose in San Francisco. He is the Cowboys’ No. 3 quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, but it appears
Dallas is confident in his abilities to fight with Rush for the No. 2 spot next year.
According to Watkins, head coach Mike McCarthy’s intention is to retain three quarterbacks on the roster, with the third-string quarterback serving in a developmental position, which may be ideal for Lance as he tries to overcome a rough start to his career.
