Detroit Lions: Looking to Extend a super Player…

The Detroit Lions are preparing to run it back next season, one year after coming one game short of their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Detroit could start their offseason by taking care of one of their best offensive weapons via a big payday. Per NFL analyst Cam Marino, the Lions are exploring a contract extension for standout wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

During his three-year NFL career, St. Brown has led the Lions in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns each season. The two-time Pro-Bowler trailed just Tyreek Hill and CeeDee Lamb in catches and receiving yards during the 2023 campaign.

The 112th pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Amon-Ra St. Brown earned first-team All-Pro honors last season after tallying 119 catches, 1,515 yards, and ten scores. St. Brown opened the season with a six-catch, 71-yard effort in his team’s upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He also scored a touchdown. The USC product registered at least 100 yards receiving a touchdown until Week 11 when he fell five yards short of the century mark against the Green Bay Packers. After a short three-week stretch of mediocre production, St. Brown posted seven catches for 112 yards and scored against the Denver Broncos mid-December.

St. Brown finished the regular season with four straight games with a receiving touchdown. He collected 32 receptions for 452 yards and four scores during that span. The 24-year-old made his postseason debut in 2023, catching seven passes for 110 yards in a narrow win against the Los Angeles Rams. He followed up his playoff debut with eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. St. Brown, who also posted a 1,000-yard season in 2022, snagged seven passes for 87 yards in the Lions’ heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship.

Amon-Ra St. Brown has one year remaining on his four-year, $4.2 million rookie contract, but the expectation is the Detroit Lions will look to extend him this offseason. Initial reports suggest the NFC North club will try to give their star pass-catcher a three-year extension with an annual value of $25 million. Only Miami’s Tyreek Hill, Rams’ standout Cooper Kupp, Las Vegas’ Davante Adams, and Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown make at least $25 million annually. However, Minnesota Vikings megastar Justin Jefferson could reset the receiver market this offseason with a historic payday.

Meanwhile, rumors have circulated that quarterback Jared Goff could receive a contract extension this offseason. Like St. Brown, Goff will enter the final year of his current contract in 2024. Goff played phenomenal last season, throwing for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns against 12 picks. He has thrown 78 touchdowns against 27 interceptions during his three-year tenure with the Lions.
