The Kings do the unexpected by keeping their choice and selecting a guard.
Wow. After months of speculation that the Sacramento Kings were planning to trade the 13th overall pick, Kings general manager Monte McNair pulled off another surprise. The Kings did not make a trade, but instead chose a guard with the 13th overall pick.
The Kings selected Providence Friars guard Devin Carter, capping months of speculation about what they might do with the pick. It appears that the Kings followed the traditional wisdom of selecting the finest talent available rather than drafting based on need. It is no secret that the Kings already have a glut of guards under contract while lacking in quality wings and bigs.
Having said that, Devin Carter is a great talent who most experts expect to finish in the top ten. Last season at Providence, the 6-foot-3 guard with a 6-foot-9 wingspan averaged 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, one block, and 1.8 steals in 35.3 minutes per game.
He had great shooting splits of 47.3/37.7/74.9 and earned a reputation as a lockdown defender. The Kings are clearly not done making roster changes, as they now have an overabundance of guards under contract while being short on forwards and having only one center, Domantas Sabonis, under contract.
Nonetheless, Carter is a talented prospect but McNair’s decision to add another guard is questionable.
