Novak Djokovic will seek retribution when he faces defending Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final on Sunday. The seven-time SW19 champion hopes to tie Roger Federer’s record of eight titles at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, but Alcaraz stands in his way once more.
Following an intense five-set duel on Centre Court that lasted four hours and 42 minutes, the pair played one of the most famous bouts in Wimbledon history. At the age of 20, Alcaraz’s remarkable enthusiasm was enough to secure a 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win.
However, 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic, who defeated 24th seed Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets in the semis, will be confident going into the 13th Wimbledon final. Djokovic has played six less sets than the Spaniard, who defeated Danill Medvedev in five sets, which may give the 37-year-old an advantage in staying fresh ahead of their sixth encounter.
Unlike tradition, the men’s singles final will not be the final event on Centre Court. Wimbledon officials had to change their schedule owing to excessive weather throughout the two-week competition, and the mixed doubles final will now take place after the final.
