Why did the Dodgers send Bobby Miller back to the academy after a bad start?

The Los Angeles Dodgers demoted right-hander Bobby Miller to the minors on Wednesday, one day after allowing nine runs in four innings at Philadelphia, raising his ERA to 8.07.

Miller, 25, is in his second season in the majors and has gone 1-2 in seven games, all as a starter, spanning 29 innings. After winning his debut start with six shutout innings, he has a 10.17 ERA after then.

According to The Athletic, Miller will spend time with the organization’s player development personnel. Manager Dave Roberts expects him to begin a stay with Triple-A Oklahoma City following the All-Star break.

The Dodgers’ rotation is already without seven starting pitchers due to injury. The list includes Tyler Glasnow (back), Yoshinobu Yamamoto (strained rotator cuff), Walker Buehler (hip discomfort) and Clayton Kershaw (recovery from shoulder surgery).

Despite those absences, Los Angeles is 55-38 and owns a 7½-game lead in the National League West.

In a matching move, the Dodgers brought up right-hander Ricky Vanasco. The 25-year-old had his sole prior major league appearance, pitching two shutout innings of relief against the Washington Nationals on April 15.

In 23 relief appearances for Oklahoma City this season, Vanasco is 0-2 with a 3.63 ERA. He has 20 walks and 25 strikeouts in 22⅓ innings.
