The Dallas Mavericks just agreed to re-sign guard Spencer Dinwiddie on a one-year contract to complete their roster for the 2024-25 season. Dinwiddie played 76 regular season games and 18 playoff games for the Mavs from 2021 to 2023 before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets in the Kyrie Irving deal.
Dinwiddie has seen what superstar guard Luka Doncic can do up close and stated in a recent street interview that Doncic is the greatest player in the NBA right now. “Currently the top player in the NBA… I believe he should have won MVP this year, but he didn’t, therefore I’ll go with Luka Doncic.”
Doncic enjoyed a great season in 2023-24, scoring 33.9 PPG, 9.8 APG, and 9.2 RPG while guiding the Mavericks to 50 victories and the NBA Finals. Despite his extraordinary numbers, he finished third in the MVP race behind Nikola Jokic and Shai-Gilgeous Alexander. For what it’s worth, he did win the ESPY Award for Best NBA Player.
Spencer Dinwiddie was a member of the Mavericks’ 2022 Western Conference Finals team and played a key role in their victory over the Suns in Game 7 of the Semifinals. While his play with the Nets and Los Angeles Lakers hasn’t been on pace with what he displayed in both playoffs, the Mavericks are still confident he will be a solid guard off the bench who can provide Doncic and Irving some rest when they need it.Dinwiddie might be saying this to appease the Mavericks’ supporters. After being dismissed by the Toronto Raptors last season, he chose the Lakers over the Mavericks, equating the former to a “coddling mother” and the latter to a “tough love” father. When the news emerged on Monday, several fans brought up the comment again, and he’ll most certainly be asked about it anytime he speaks to the media.
