The addition of veteran guard Chris Paul didn’t work for the Golden State Warriors last season.
While pairing Paul with superstar guard Steph Curry to form a dynamic backcourt looked good on paper, the Warriors fell short of their goal and missed the playoffs.
Paul only spent one year with the team before joining the San Antonio Spurs on a one-year deal.
This season, the Warriors are off to a strong start with a 7-2 record, as of writing. With Curry and seasoned forward Draymond Green leading the way anew, Golden State isn’t lacking in leadership despite Paul’s exit.
Green admitted that he wasn’t sold on bringing in Paul and partnering him with Curry because of their history. Green noted that Curry sees the 39-year-old Paul as his “big brother.”
“I’m watching him and Steph’s relationship, and I’m like, that ain’t gonna work for us to be who we want to be,” said the outspoken veteran on “The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis.”
“CP is smart as hell. So, I’m just looking at it, and I’m like, he’s playing on that. He’s using that to keep you (Curry) here (close to him). But I don’t like that.”
The former Defensive Player of the Year added that he “started being messy” to create a divide between the two All-Star playmakers.
“They were super tight,” said Green. “I started intentionally creating a rift because I felt like CP was using that to his advantage.
“As I’m creating a rift with them, me and CP (clashed), and under no circumstances do I even want to correct it.”
The Warriors had tension-filled battles with Paul when he was still with the Houston Rockets, with Green also admitting that he hated the future Hall of Fame guard.Golden State finished with a 46-36 record in Paul’s lone season and lost to the Sacramento Kings in the Play-In Tournament.
