It appeared that Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon had crossed the line for silver in the women’s 5,000m final behind her compatriot Beatrice Chebet, who won in 14:28.56. However, Kipyegon was disqualified for a track obstruction heading into the final two laps. With her disqualification, Sifan Hassan took the silver, and Italy’s Nadia Battocletti claimed the bronze.
According to race officials, Kipyegon violated World Athletics competition rule 17.1.2, which states that if an athlete is found responsible for jostling or obstruction, they (or their team) shall be liable to disqualification from that event.
The race got off to a slow start until Kipyegon picked up the pace with four laps to go. Chebet sat on her compatriot’s heels until 100m from the finish, surging past Kipyegon on the home straight to win her first Olympic gold.
Hassan followed up her Tokyo 2020 gold in this event with a silver medal three years later in Paris. Battocletti set a national record, winning the first medal for Italy in the women’s 5,000m event in over two decades.

Athletics Kenya has the opportunity to appeal the official’s ruling. If they choose to appeal and it is overturned, the officials would make a decision in the hours following the race.
Chebet’s victory marked Kenya’s first gold medal on the track at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
