FBI foils deadly plot targeting Buc-ee’s, New Braunfels high schools

SAN ANTONIO – A plot to attack the Buc-ees on I-35 and two New Braunfels High Schools was stopped by the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The man plotting the attack, Cameron Darrick Peterson, pleaded guilty yesterday to one of the three counts against him.

My investigation led us to details that were not in a press release sent out by the US Attorney’s Office.

Peterson allegedly started planning the mass shootings in November 2022. In January of this year, he attempted to buy a 12-gauge shotgun from Comal Pawn, but he was denied due to the type of weapon and his age.

Meanwhile, Peterson continued to plan his attack on Buc-ee’s and two High Schools.

A video recorded in the woods of a New Braunfels park, shows him discussing the attack with his girlfriend sources say.

The attack at the Buc-ees was meant to be a distraction.

Peterson then would go to the two high schools, Canyon High School and the other New Braunfels High School.

Sources tell us that Peterson was once a student at Canyon High School. Those familiar with the plea deal Wednesday in court, tell me Peterson had one Improvised Explosive Device (IED) fully constructed and had the materials to create an additional ten IEDs.

Peterson’s alleged plan was to execute the mass shootings in 2026 or sooner. However, authorities believe that after he attempted to purchase a weapon in January and was denied his plan changed and he may have been plotting to execute it sooner.

So in May he tried for a second time to purchase a weapon but was flagged due to alleged previous lies on his ATF federal form when he tried to buy the weapon in January.

Federal sources say that during this year’s graduations, extra precautions were taken at both high schools since Peterson had not yet been arrested. On June 5th he was taken into custody.

If the judge signs off on the plea deal during sentencing Peterson could do a maximum of 10 years behind bars instead of facing 20 to life if he had gone to court and been found guilty of the 3 charges initially filed against him.Sentencing is scheduled for early next year.We called both Comal ISD and New Braunfels ISD for a comment.Comal ISD responded that they didn’t want to comment on the Peterson case.
