The Golden State Warriors parted ways with four-time champion Klay Thompson, but they did sign another excellent scorer in free agency.
Buddy Hield is expected to join the Warriors in a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, agreeing to a four-year deal worth $18 million guaranteed, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday. The individual requested anonymity since he was not authorised to talk publicly until the deal was signed.
Philadelphia will receive a 2031 second-round selection that the Warriors acquired as part of Thompson’s trade with the Mavericks.
Hield, who was dealt from the Indiana Pacers to the 76ers in February, averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, a career best-high 84 games during the 2023-24 NBA season.

Hield will form a strong backcourt with Steph Curry, who shot a league-high 357 3-pointers last season. Hield shot 38.6% from deep last season, slightly below than his career average of 40%.
It is the Warriors’ latest addition since Thompson left the franchise in free agency. Thompson, who has spent his whole career with the Warriors, has agreed to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million contract, according to a source familiar with the situation. The individual sought anonymity since they were not authorised to talk publicly until the deal is official.
Thompson, a five-time All-Star who has won four titles with the Warriors, averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists last season while shooting 38.7% from three.
