Fans and fellow athletes alike were puzzled by the Olympic committee’s choice to leave the great player off the national team.
The New York Times’ sports outlet, The Athletic, revealed information about the basketball selection committee’s snub on Saturday. The Indiana Fever rookie responded to the rumors on Sunday, according to the Daily Mail.
“I’m excited for the girls that are on the team,” Clark stated. “I know it’s the most competitive team in the world, and I know it could’ve gone any way, with me on the squad or me not being on the team.”
“I’m excited for them, gonna be rooting them on to win gold. I was a kid that grew up watching the Olympics, it’ll be fun to watch them,” she said.
Clark’s conspicuous absence from the expected team roster caused an upset across the country when announced because of her stellar record in the WNBA.
A POSSIBLE EXPLANATION
There has been huge speculation by fans and sports pundits alike as to why Clark was passed over by the group and head coach Cheryl Reeve.
Other athletes have suggested that the committee favors more veteran players like A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.
