Green Bay Packers: Brian Gutekunst responds to Jordan Love’s contract extension.

Brian Gutekunst, general manager of the Green Bay Packers, addressed the media at the NFL combine on Tuesday. One of the topics brought to his attention was the Jordan Love contract extension negotiations. Love deserved a new deal given his performance this season for Green Bay.

Due to contract relegations, they are unable to renew him until May, although Gutekunst and his representatives can begin discussing a new contract before then. Gutekunst informed Mike Spofford of Packers.com that:

“I’m sure I’ll encounter (Love’s representatives) sometime while we’re here. It’s definitely a wonderful moment to acquire information.

It will be interesting to see what kind of contract extension Love is going to get when the time comes. He is currently in the final year of his entry-level deal with the Green Bay Packers. It is very possible that Love can get somewhere between $40 million to $50 million per season when they get this contract extension done.

Love is 25 years old and has many bright seasons ahead of him. The good news about Jordan Love’s contract extension this summer is that his wide receivers and tight ends won’t have to be paid for at least another two to three seasons while still on rookie contracts.

Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst deserves credit for drafting Jordan Love.

The Packers’ fan base has occasionally chastised general manager Brian Gutekunst for passing up draft picks and other free-agent signings. Love was picked in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Utah State, where he spent three seasons developing behind Aaron Rodgers.

Gutekunst deserves credit for finding another gem in Jordan Love. It is rare that this franchise continues to hit on franchise quarterbacks. Bart Starr, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and now Love. A season ago with the Packers, he completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Love has the potential to help the Packers win another Super Bowl title one of these days. Gutekunst and Love’s reps should not be in a rush to get a contract done, but it is better to get a contract extension before the 2024 season. If they don’t get that done before the season, it could be a lingering problem and possibly a distraction.
