The Green Bay Packers have difficult decisions every offseason. They’ve let go of some long-time players for the third consecutive year. Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers, and Aaron Jones undoubtedly top that list, but there have been many more.
This week, the Packers opted to release a former All-Pro. A move that, although not shocking, does leave a hole in the Packers’ defense.
The Green Bay Packers Decided To Move On From Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.
The San Francisco 49ers have signed Campbell, a 2022 first-team All-Pro, to a one-year contract through 2024, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. On March 13, he was released with a post-June 1 destination, resulting in about $10.57 million in salary-cap relief postponed until June 2.
Campbell’s release by the Packers was not a huge surprise. He was a discount veteran signee in 2021 before being named All-Pro for the team in 2022, which earned him a five-year, $50 million contract extension. In 2023, however, he missed six games due to injury and failed to play regularly for a defense that appeared to be in disarray for much of the season.
While news of his signing broke, Campbell took to Instagram to poke fun at his former team, the Green Bay Packers.
It is likely Packers fans will be monitoring how Campbell does with the San Francisco 49ers this year. I would expect some heavy hitting on both sides if the teams meet in the playoffs again.
