Michael Johnson, a four-time Olympic gold medallist, has questioned Team USA’s decision to select Coco Gauff the flagbearer.

On Friday night, the tennis star joined LeBron James at the head of Team USA’s opening ceremony boat, holding the flag as they made their way up the Seine.

Gauff is the reigning US Open champion and a strong candidate for the women’s tennis gold medal in Paris.

On Friday night, the tennis star joined LeBron James at the helm of Team USA’s opening ceremony boat, holding the flag as they travelled up the Seine.

Gauff is the reigning US Open champion and a candidate for the women’s tennis gold medal in Paris.Johnson told the BBC: “I’m a little upset with the USA team’s pick.”

‘I was hoping to see Simone Biles or an Olympic athlete from a conventional Olympic sport. I believe they went for popularity.Unless Simone stated that she did not want to [since she needed to prepare for her competition]. That’s a possibility.

Gauff is the country’s youngest flag bearer at a summer Olympics and the first tennis player to win the honour. Biles, however, missed the opening ceremony on Friday night to prepare for the gymnastics competition, which begins on Sunday.
