“I’m not coming back,” former Sunderland manager rejects calls to return to the club due to…

Sunderland gave Coach a boost in his managerial pursuit with a 42% win rate.

Sunderland are currently looking for a new head coach, and there has been some progress on one major possibility, according to recent sources.

The Black Cats gained a hard-fought goalless draw at Elland Road on Tuesday night, jeopardising Leeds United’s chances of automatic promotion. Under temporary manager Mike Dodds, the Wearside team has snatched four points from the Whites in his two spells in command this season.

It’s not been the campaign that Sunderland would have wanted after reaching the play-off semi-finals last term. Currently, Dodds’ men are inside the bottom half of the table, closer to the relegation zone than the top six.

Nonetheless, the board will try to select a new permanent manager in the summer to replace Michael Beale in the dugout, with the goal of contending for promotion back to the Premier League next season.

Will Still, the manager of Reims, has been connected to the position. When Tony Mowbray was dismissed of his duties in December, the English-speaking Belgian was touted as his successor. It was also reported that the club’s owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, had ‘good talks’ with Still.

The 31-year-old has done an impressive job in France’s top-flight with Reims and currently boasts a 42% win rate across his 62 competitive matches in charge, even picking up two draws against Paris Saint-Germain last season when Lionel Messi and Neymar were still at the club.

According to a report in French magazine Le 10 Sport, Reims is now looking for potential coaches to replace Still this summer, as the youthful boss is expected to move for pastures new, providing Sunderland an advantage in their pursuit of his services.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Still stated that he would consider joining a Championship team if the situation was right.

“I would work for a Championship team without a problem,” he added.

“If there’s a Championship club that’s ambitious, that wants to work in the right way and be open and honest about things, and really try and push to get somewhere, then I would love to do that.”
