PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College President Fr. Kenneth Sicard, O.P. and Vice President/Athletics Director Steve Napolillo announced today (April 5) that Kim English has agreed to a six-year contract extension as head coach of the men’s basketball programme.
“I’m very thankful to Father Sicard and Steve Napolillo for extending and deepening our connection with each other and the College,” stated Men’s Basketball Head Coach Kim English. “I am deeply committed to our student athletes as well as the entire Friartown community. This past season, we received incredible support from our fans, contributors, and the community, which is one of the many reasons I believe our programme will succeed in the future. I am looking forward to the exciting times ahead as we prepare to compete for championships.”
In his first season at Providence, English guided the Friars to a 21-14 overall record and a 10-10 BIG EAST record. English became the first Friar head coach to win 20 games in his debut season at PC. The Friars won six quad one games and proceeded to the NIT. Junior Devin Carter became only the second Friar ever to be awarded BIG EAST Player of the Year, while Josh Oduro was chosen All-BIG EAST Honourable Mention.
“Coach English has done an outstanding job leading our men’s basketball team in his inaugural year,” Father Sicard said. “Given the hardships of last season, he has demonstrated an instinctive ability to motivate his players to persist with confidence. We value his dedication to our programme and hope that he will continue to do so for many years.
“I have always felt that Coach English is a perfect fit for Providence College,” Napolillo remarked. “Watching Kim during his first season as head coach at Providence College, it became clear that we have the right coach to lead our programme.” His ability to lead and instruct our student athletes is exceptional. I am thrilled that we are able to reinforce our commitment to Kim and his staff with this contract extension, and I look forward to competing for BIG EAST Championships in the future.”
He was an assistant coach in Knoxville until 2021 when he became the head coach at George Mason.
