MotoGP will return to Misano on September 22 for a second round, following the cancellation of the Kazakhstan round due to disastrous floods. Sokol is the third MotoGP event to be cancelled, following India and Argentina.
The return to Misano for round two will be known as Emilia Romagna MotoGP, a term used for repeat events at the circuit during Covid. MotoGP officials made an official announcement regarding the Grand Prix’s return to Misano.
An official statement from FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports, stated, “Operational and logistical issues arising from the earlier flooding across the region have rendered the event impossible to hold in 2024.”
The new change in the calendar means that the San Marino MotoGP will take place between September 6 and 8 as planned, while the Emilia Romagna event will return from September 20 to 22.
Moto GP India: What happened?
The race was initially planned to take place in India, however, the event organisers, Fairstreet and MotoGP, decided to cancel the event and move it to March 2025. The cancellation was owing to multiple factors, including issues with the Indian organisers failing to meet the contractual obligations of the 2023 race.
In an official statement, Farestreet CEO, Pushkar Nath Srivastava said, “The decision to move the race to March of next year, aiming for the first or second week, was a collective agreement among all stakeholders. The unsuitable weather conditions in September posed significant challenges for both riders and marshals, as observed last year. With the support and vision of the government of UP, the race in March will be staged in a grander manner and will aim to set a new standard for excellence in motorsport events.”
