Lando Norris claimed his maiden Formula One victory at the Miami Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen’s cockpit response to Lando Norris’ first Formula One victory at the Miami Grand Prix has been revealed.
On Sunday, the Miami International Autodrome became a sea of papaya after Norris defeated defending world champion Verstappen by 7.6 seconds to claim his first F1 victory.
The 24-year-old later stated: “It all just came together. We moved quickly all day. I had a strong approach and plan. I kept out of the way of trouble on Turn One because it was so near. I just focused on our race, and we finished quickly.”
As the cars crossed the line and Norris celebrated his maiden victory, Red Bull superstar Verstappen was seen clapping the Brit as he drove past the McLaren on the cool down lap.
After the Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen continues to lead the championship as he sits top with 136 points, 33 ahead of teammate Sergio Perez.
Norris climbed to fourth place and is now level on points with Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz.
Following the race, Red Bull team manager and CEO Christian Horner announced that Verstappen’s car had been damaged after colliding with a bollard.
He said: “He impacted the bollard at lap 20 and caused significant damage to the car’s underside.
“So we’ll have to look at what the effects were. But he had enough pace at that moment; he was moving away from Oscar [Piastri] behind and Lando before he had that damage, and then, obviously, we pitted.”
Horner added: “And yeah, the safety car came out at the best time for Lando, which gave him essentially a free stop. But, obviously, not great for us because then you’re on tyres six or seven laps older. And with the damage, I think that actually second place was actually still a pretty decent result.
“He lost two and a half tenths every lap in turn one. Now whether that was because of the damage, I think when you actually see the pictures of what was missing it wasn’t designed like that.”
