Mike McDaniel, the Miami Dolphins’ head coach, is almost as well-known for his one-liners as he is for his unique offensive philosophy.
Some will claim McDaniel is a strange character. Others firmly believe he is one of the funniest persons in professional sports.
We’ll go with the latter.
In an interview with the media at the NFL meetings on Monday, McDaniel was asked about the famous Bill Belichick’s departure from the New England Patriots. His response was superb.
“To say that I’m sombre and have been mourning the loss of Bill Belichick in the AFC East would be a flat out lie and I wouldn’t lie to you,” McDaniel told reporters after the game.
That is hilarious stuff right there. He is also not wrong.
For the overwhelming majority of his 24-year tenure in New England, Belichick oversaw a Patriots club that absolutely crushed AFC East competition. This included 17 division championships and six Super Bowl triumphs.
Sure, New England fell on hard times during the end of Belichick’s tenure. But not having him in the AFC East for the first time since all the way back in 1999 is going to be all sort of weird.
As for Mike McDaniel and his Dolphins, they are coming off consecutive playoff appearances in his first two seasons with the team. Prior to his arrival, Miami had not made back-to-back playoff appearances since the early 2000s.
