Following a six-season career with the Dallas Cowboys, wide receiver Michael Gallup is now looking for a new team.
According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys officially dismissed Gallup on Friday.
Gallup signed a lucrative five-year, $62.5 million contract in 2022, with a $13.85 million cap charge for the 2024 season. However, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reported on March 9 that, despite the Cowboys enabling Gallup to explore trade alternatives, interest from other teams was limited, as they expected his impending release.
Opting for a post-June 1 release designation, the Cowboys will realize a $9.5 million savings against the 2024 salary cap, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. Nevertheless, Gallup will still account for $8.7 million against the team’s 2025 cap.
Gallup, a third-round draft pick of the Cowboys in 2018, peaked with 1,107 yards in his second season, but his effectiveness has dipped since then.
Gallup’s performance dropped drastically in 2023, totaling a career-low 418 yards despite appearing in all 17 games. His role in the passing game has shrunk since the addition of veteran receiver Brandin Cooks and the rise of second-year tight end Jake Ferguson.
While Gallup has demonstrated potential as a productive receiver when healthy and given the opportunity, his next team will most likely look to give him a more prominent role in their offensive plan.
With Gallup’s departure, the Cowboys will place even greater reliance on star receiver CeeDee Lamb, fresh off an All-Pro season in 2023.
