As the 2024 NBA draft approaches, Providence guard Devin Carter is expected to be taken early.
Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer said in his mock draft on Tuesday that sources said Carter “has received a promise” from a team “somewhere in the lottery.”
In his mock draft, O’Connor predicted that Carter would be taken by the Chicago Bulls with the 11th choice, noting that he would be a logical match if veteran shooting guard DeMar DeRozan left in free agency.
“Could that team be the Bulls?” Carter would be an excellent complement to Coby White as a lockdown defender who can thrive with or without the ball on offense,” O’Connor said. “Additionally, DeMar DeRozan might leave in free agency, where he would fit with the Clippers if Paul George were to sign elsewhere, so there’d be an immediate minutes void that Carter could fill.”
Carter is coming off an impressive junior season at Providence in which he averaged 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals on his way to being named Big East Player of the Year and earning AP All-American honorable mention honors. He didn’t get the chance to showcase his skills during March Madness because the Friars were left out of the field of the NCAA Tournament.
B/R’s Jonathan Wasserman also projects Carter as a lottery pick, predicting in his mock draft that he would be selected 13th overall by the Sacramento Kings.
“Teams may question the upside of a 6’2″ combo, but between the shotmaking improvement, nifty ball-screen play and outstanding defensive length, IQ, quickness and intensity, Carter looks like a top-20 lock who’ll get looks in the late lottery,” Wasserman stated.
It sounds like Carter could turn out to be one of the biggest steals of the NBA draft if he lands in the right situ ation.
